Chapter 18

“What the hell do you mean she checked out?” Kordell yelled. “I know my wife is staying here! I demand to see the manager!”

When Kordell’s jet landed in Brazil He called Christine back to back and didn’t get an answer. It had been over a week since they’d spoken and he was actually getting worried that something may have happed to her. The whole idea of her just running off not coming home was so bizarre that he couldn’t believe.

After he arrived at the resort that she was staying he went straight to her room, only to find it occupied with an older white couple. He then marched straight down to the desk and demanded answers.

“Yes sir, what seems to be the problem,” a tall thin man with a manager’s badge asked him.

“The problem is I’m looking for my wife Christine Kincaid. She’s supposed to be in room 2201 but she’s not there. She’s not answering her phone and I’m afraid that something has happened to her.”

“I’m sorry sir, but our records show that she checked out three days ago. Have you notified the police?”

“No I haven’t, this is absolutely ridiculous!”

“I’m sorry I can’t be of more help sir…”

Kordell walked away while the man was still talking. His heart sank. What if something really did happen to Christine? When he got to his hotel he called his friend, Detective Sanchez. He had him trailing Christine from the beginning of her vacation. In the beginning he was keeping him informed, However after Christine spotted him keeping eyes on her she ran him off. He realized that he was no longer on the case but it was worth a shot to see if he had any clues to her whereabouts.

“Sanchez, yeah it’s me, Kordell.”

“Hey man what’s going on? You got another job for me?”

“Hell no! You couldn’t even do the one I hired you for. How could you let my wife see you?”

“Hey, I told you before I’m sorry man. I can’t apologize enough. I didn’t think she would recognize me.”

“Even still, why would you let her run you away? You were working for me not her.”

“Well…..”

“Well what? Speak up! My wife is missing and I may have to get the police involved.”

“Didn’t she tell you that she was ok the last time you guys spoke?”

Sanchez asked.

“Well yes…”

“And didn’t you say that she had cut the calls down to once a week? Maybe she just doesn’t want to be bothered.”

“To hell with that! I’m her husband! I see that you are useless. You don’t have anything that can help me,” Kordell vented.

Sanchez let out a deep sigh.

“Hey man, this goes against my strict policy of client confidentially but I can see that you are worried about you wife. Plus you are my friend.”

“Go ahead, spit it out!”

“I can’t go into details, but your wife is fine. You asked me how I could let her run me off. The fact is. She didn’t. She knew that you sent me and offered me more money not to tell you where she was, I’m sorry.
